Are wine glasses really necessary?
If you are drinking wine then wine glasses are necessary.
We are wine people through and through. We love a bottle of good wine, and we drink it regularly. In my opinion, wine is only drinkable from wine glasses. If you ever have the opportunity to compare a wine out of a wine glass and one out of just a normal water glass, pint glass, or even a plastic wine glass I encourage you to try it. It is amazing how much the flavor of the wine changes. The smell of wine is just as important as the taste, and wine glasses are developed to monopolize on this fact. With that being said you do not need excessively expensive wine glasses or all the different types if you are a casual wine drinker. Early in our wine-drinking days we just had the Threshold brand stemless wine glasses from Target and they did just fine while still improving the wine-drinking experience immensely. Bonus! We find that we can put our stemless wine glasses in the dishwasher without a problem. Our current favorite wine glasses are a little higher-end. We love our Riedels and I do think they make a difference but ultimately for a casual wine drinker, I don’t think it is enough of a difference to justify the cost. Ultimately if you are going to drink wine, get wine glasses. They don’t need to be expensive, just glass. Don’t have any glass wine glasses yet?
