Our Journey Cooking with Cast Iron

Have you heard of cast iron cookware? Whether you are a true loyalist who cooks all their meals on cast iron, inherited the pan from their Grandma that had been in the family for over 50 years, or were gifted a brand new Lodge cast iron pan as a wedding gift and you have no idea how to cook with it the learning curve does not have to be difficult with creating that magical, perfectly seasoned and non-stick surface for all your cooking done on the stove.

Let’s just start with my own personal journey with cast iron. A few years back we were moving my Grandma out of her house and to an independent living facility. Now my Grandma was born in the great depression, so for good reason, she had accumulated a LOT of stuff throughout the years and it was all free picking for her children and grandchildren. Now I had just graduated from college and was not a huge cook yet. But when I saw my brother take the cast iron pan that my Grandma cooked every meal on forever I had this massive moment of jealousy and managed to walk out the door with the remaining three that I could find. Then they managed to just sit in the apartment of mine and Katie’s for the next 2 years with Katie frequently asking if we were ever going to use it. My logical response to the situation was “Yes, we are going to use it, please stop asking me about it” with Katie and I knowing full well I had no immediate plans to touch those.

Fast forward a couple of years, Katie looks up how to season the pans so since it had been many many years since anyone had touched these pans, she washed them and seasoned them up (I will explain how to season and care for your pan in a different blog post). We both started cooking more and we just found that the cast iron unlocked this flavor that never really existed with our teflon and copper non-stick pans at the time. It was still casual use but gradually it started to be our go-to pan for everything.

We absolutely love cast iron cooking with its flexibility and ability to cook at high heat and searing abilities. We cook almost all of the recipes you will see in our recipes tab, and it works out fantastic. I understand it can seem intimidating but I will explain in a different blog post how it doesn’t need to be difficult and you can have a wonderful pan that you can keep forever and not have to replace ever! Your standard non-stick pan definitely can’t live up to those expectations!
